Tainted products alert Jan. 28, 2014: Hot Detox, Thinogenics, Bali Mojo, Tonic Life BP, Citrus Fit Gold, JINQIANGBUDOR Red Dragon, Vimax, SexRx, and Tiger King

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued notifications on several tainted products sold as dietary supplements on January 28, 2014. The updates include Hot Detox, Thinogenics, Bali Mojo, Tonic Life BP, Citrus Fit Gold, JINQIANGBUDOR Red Dragon, Vimax, SexRx, and Tiger King.

Hot Detox, Thinogenics, and Citrus Fit Gold contain the controlled substance sibutramine, which was removed from the market in October 2010. Sibutramine substantially increases blood pressure and heart rate, especially for people with coronary artery disease, stroke, arrhythmias, or congestive heart failure. It also may interact with other medications in life threatening ways. The FDA advises consumers to stop using these products and throw them away.

Bali Mojo, SexRx, and Vimax contain tadalafil, the active ingredient in the drug Cialis, used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Tadalafil may interact with nitrates in medications such as nitroglycerin and lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. The FDA advises consumers to stop using these products immediately and throw them away.

Tonic Life BP contains phenolphthalein, an ingredient that was used as a laxative until 1999 when it was reclassified as "not generally recognized as safe and effective" because studies showed it to have a potential cancer-causing (carcinogenic) risk.

JINQIANGBUDOR Red Dragon, SexRx, and Tiger King contain sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Sildenafil may interact with nitrates in medications such as nitroglycerin and lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. The FDA advises consumers to stop using these products immediately and throw them away.

SexRx contains both sildenafil and tadalafil, listed above.

The FDA points out that there is a "growing trend of dietary supplements or conventional foods with hidden drugs and chemicals. These products are typically promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, and body building and are often represented as being all natural."
